Songhyeon Green Square and Seoul Craft Museum
The "Songhyeon-dong site" in Jongno-gu, which has been surrounded by high fences for more than a century, will return to citizens' arms.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said it will refurbish the site (37,117㎡) in Songhyeon-dong as an "open Songhyeon Green Square with rest and culture" and temporarily open it to citizens from 5:30 p.m. on the 7th.
The site in Songhyeon-dong has been used as a residence of Siksan Bank in Japanese colonial era, a U.S. military residence after liberation, and a residence at the U.S. Embassy. It was returned to the Korean government in 1997 and returned, but it has since been left in ruins without any use. In early July, the ownership of the site was changed from Korean Air to the Korea Urban Housing Corporation, and it will soon be transferred to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
First, the wall surrounding the entire site was lowered to 4m → 1.2m. As a result, it is possible to capture a wide green plaza at a glance from Yulgok-ro, Gammdang-gil, and Jongchin-bu-gil. If you enter the stone wall, you will see a 10,000㎡ central grass square in the center of the square, which is wider than the Seoul Plaza grass (6,449㎡). Wildflower colonies such as cosmos and crimson have been created around the central grass square, making you feel like you are in a quiet suburb.
Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon are connected by a shortcut (walking path) into the square as the Songhyeon-dong site opens. Walking along the pedestrian path across the square naturally leads to Cheong Wa Dae, Gwanghwamun Square, Insa-dong, and Bukchon alleyways.
